This is one film that embodies perfectly the festival’s general theme. Scenes taken from daily social life at places around the world, are juxtaposed with very contrasting images of overwhelming natural landscapes. The one is right in front of us, the other a world we cannot reach. Together they reflect the ambiguity of life as a “public” and a “private” matter at the same time. As part of the festival program with individual artists’ works put in a public context, the film invites viewers to stand face to face with a reality that is close yet at once far away. Summing up Terrence Malick’s life work of 40 years, it questions once again what it means that we are here.

Summary

The universe began with the Big Bang, and the resulting planets and their transformations have created and nurtured forms of life. While reviewing, through images, the annals from the viewpoint of natural science, the film explores the essence of life and its journey from the past to the present and into the future.

It is Cate Blanchett who leads the viewer into this world through her narration.

Thanks to the collaboration of teams of visual effects artists scientific advisors, natural phenomena on the earth and in the sky, as well as micro and macro realms, are depicted by an exceptionally wide variety of methods, to offer an entirely new cinematic experience.
